Sarah Malmude
Sarah Malmude is a dynamic, multi-disciplinary artist whose creative practice has been shaped by extensive international study and diverse artistic pursuits. Her foundational training was at the University of Southern Maine, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art with an emphasis on studio practice in 2008. Malmude's education is distinguished by its global scope and her commitment to immersive learning experiences.
A pivotal part of her development occurred from 2006 to 2007 when she lived and studied full-time at the Art Academy of Latvia in Riga through a student exchange program. There, she delved into studio painting, anatomy, and visual communication, while also learning the Latvian language. This period was further enriched by her private studies in drawing and painting under the mentorship of esteemed Latvian artist Arnolds Plaudis, providing her with a unique and profound connection to European artistic traditions.
Her international experience also includes a summer of theater studies in London, where she not only engaged with the city's vibrant performance scene but also wrote and directed her own play, demonstrating her versatility across different creative mediums.
Following her undergraduate degree, Malmude continued to refine her craft at some of New York City's most prestigious art institutions, taking continuing education courses at the Pratt Institute and The Art Students League of New York between 2012 and 2013.
Her talent was recognized on an international stage early in her career. In 2007, she was honored with a significant exhibition at the Latvian Embassy in Riga. This special invitation resulted in over twenty of her paintings being displayed in the embassy's main meeting area during the high-profile 19th NATO summit, showcasing her work to a global audience. This diverse and rigorous training has cultivated a unique artistic voice, blending classical technique with a contemporary, global perspective.
From an early age, Sarah was immersed in an environment that encouraged artistic exploration. At just four years old, she began to cultivate her creative interests under the support of her family. Visits to her grandmother’s home in Maine proved especially formative, where the walls displayed the works of her late uncle, Joachim Probst, a distinguished painter whose artistic legacy left a lasting imprint. Surrounded by his paintings, Sarah absorbed both the expressive vitality of his style and the joy his work brought to those around her. These early encounters not only instilled in her a deep respect for the power of visual art but also became the foundation upon which she began to shape her own distinct, bold, and graphic aesthetic.
